The Science Behind The Phenomenon
One of more than 120 different cannabinoids, cannabidiol, aka “CBD,” is the non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. CBD does not produce a euphoric feeling. Our products simply do not contain THC, therefore it is not possible to have any psychoactive feelings. CBD may influence the body to use its Endocannabinoid System (ECS) by binding to cannabinoid receptors and triggering a therapeutic response. CBD is rich in phytocannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids are the exogenous cannabinoids produced by trichomes which cover the surface of the plant. Trichomes are responsible for producing all of the desired compounds of the cannabis plant and more than 120 cannabinoids.
Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids that are produced inside the body and are responsible for helping the body achieve homeostasis. Endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids on a structural level are not so different. They both bind to cannabinoid receptors and activate the ECS. Phystocannabinoids basically just pick up the slack from the endocannabinoids and have the ability to produce a vast array of effects.
What Is The Endocannabinoid System?
The human body contains a natural, cannabis-like system called the Endocannabinoid System. The ECS is a set of receptors in the human body and a set of molecules which attach to those receptors. There are two primary receptors in this system — CB1 and CB2. Each receptor targets a different part of the body. CB1 is primarily in charge of the central nervous system and you can find CB2 in blood cell precursors, on immune cells and in other bodily tissues.
Scientists discovered that the Endocannabinoid System is relatively old, having evolved over 500 million years ago and is also found in all walks of life, not just humans. The main function of the ECS is to maintain biological homeostasis in response to environmental changes. At first scientists thought that the ECS was only located in the brain and nervous system but they later discovered that the ECS is located throughout the entire body. It is in our skin, blood vessels, skeletal muscle, immune system, bone, liver, pancreas, kidney, gastrointestinal tract, and fat tissue.
The ECS is involved in a huge variety of bodily processes such as memory, pain, appetite, immune function, sleep, stress, metabolism and reproductive function. Endocannabinoids are one of the most versatile molecules known to man. That is why CBD could be helpful for people with all different ailments.
